AmeriCorps Learning Center Specialist II
Member Description
The AmeriCorps Learning Center Specialist II will assist and facilitate the educational program at the Learning Service Center by carrying out the following specific duties as well as generally being available to assist the program staff in program support tasks. The Learning Center Specialist II will be under the immediate supervision of the Program Director who will delegate and coordinate the tasks and duties as well as monitor the workload and performance. The Learning Center Specialist II are expected to work forty hours a week but may be asked to work additional hours and are expected to be available some weekends and holidays. This is a full-time AmeriCorps service position.
As an AmeriCorps member, the Learning Center Specialist II is not an employee of Young Detroit Builders and is not subject to the policies and benefits in the Employee Handbook. Instead they are subject to the policies of the Member Contract. The living allowance is calculated based upon $11,400 (2009-10 Budget year) for 1,700 hours of service. They are also entitled to health insurance benefits if they are not covered with another plan, child care benefits, and an educational award of $4,725.00 upon completion of 1,700 hours of service within a year from the date of enrollment.
Specific Duties include:
1. Prepare the LSC building for daily inspections by conducting hourly interior and exterior walk-about(s) of the premises ensuring there is an accurate count of YDB staff personnel and student/ client base are accounted and on task;
2. Assist construction staff in compiling materials for service projects and lessons;
3. Provide support to teachers, the Leadership Development Specialist, Job Developer, and Counselor as an aide to facilitating the schedule and events;
4. Research and locate speakers and special resources for workshop topics in job readiness and life skills;
5. Develop a protocol for scheduling building maintenance and light repair projects;
6. Assist Program Director in monitoring LSC building security
7. Research information for field trips and assist LSC staff on field trips;
8. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials in the Learning Center and notify Administrative Assistant when ordering is needed;
9. Maintain and replenish bulletin board and other informational notices in the LSC;
10. Direct students, visitors service providers to the appropriate locations within the LSC to receive program assistance;
11. Develop and implement a schedule for seasonal and daily maintenance of the exterior building i.e., snow removal, landscaping and any other task associated with property maintenance;
12. Under the direction and supervision of the Job Developer, assist in compiling and posting employment ads and surveying web sites for graduate job placements;
13. Assist in mailings and other large projects which require assistance;
14. Assist Recovery Act tutors assistance in developing the tutoring schedule and coordinating tutor activities;
15. Provide support to projects and work of the Community Partnership Specialist.
Qualifications
1. High school diploma and some college;
2. Commitment to the concept of national community service;
3. Willing to carry out the work tasks delegated;
4. Able to follow directions and complete detailed tasks accurately;
5. Ability to work well with diverse people and tasks;n
6. Sensitivity to young people and their needs;
7. Willingness to accept and complete job tasks with a positive and enthusiastic attitude and manner;
8. Familiarity and knowledge of YouthBuild AmeriCorps program and philosophy;
9. Willingness to be supportive of Young Detroit Builders’ programs, goals, and methods;
10. Able to work cooperatively and act as team player;
11. Dependability and reliability for being on time, in attendance and ready to work;
12. Good reading, writing, and communication skills.
Benefits: The AmeriCorps program provides a living allowance of $11,400 per year, health insurance, child care benefits if eligible, twelve days of paid leave time, and an educational award of $4,725.00 upon the completion of 1,700 hours of service. The educational award can be used anytime up to seven years from the date of your completion of service. It may be used to pay off student loans and tuition and fees at qualified institutions of higher learning.
